Neutrino detector

Neutrino detector, or also called as neutrino observatory, is a facility to detect the existence of neutrino. Neutrino is any of three electrically neutral elementary particles in the lepton family [1]. There are three kinds of neutrino. According to the Standard Model of particle physics, there are three different kinds of neutrinos: electron neutrinos (which are the ones produced in the sun and the ones detected by the above-mentioned experiments, in particular the chlorine-detector Homestake Mine experiment), muon neutrinos, and tau neutrinos [7]. It is a part of a smallest thing in the world. So, it is normal if people often called neutrino as something mysterious. It also called as “particles from outer space that are almost undetectable” or “one of the most elusive elementary particles travels through space” [2]. But, it “small ghost” is very interesting for many researchers over the world; it is important ‘tools’ to learn about sun. How come? The answer is because of the neutrino formation in space. Researches believe that neutrino is a result of certain types of radioactive decay or nuclear reactions such as those that take place in the sun, in nuclear reactors, or when cosmic rays hit atoms [3]. That’s the key: neutrino is also resulted from the nuclear reaction in the sun. So, it is way to thinking about: if we can detect the result, we can predict the process. For example, if we taste the sweet in our cake, we can predict that some sugar or saccharin is added in the cooking process of our cake. It is how we should think; if neutrino is really made and can be detected, the theory that believed by the researchers that there are some nuclear reactions (in term of fusion reaction) in our sun should be true also. So, many neutrino detectors are built. It is the most possible way to prove the reaction happened in the sun, because it is really impossible to prove it by visiting the sun.  Read more Continue Reading »
